Category III -- Strategies for Professionals -- 18 hour course

  • Course Type:  Online Learning

  • Objective: This course is designed to:

    • enable participants to increase their knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of school professionals in Florida regarding English Language Learners (ELL) students.

    • enable professionals to increase their knowledge and understandings regarding English Language Learners (ELL) students.

    • prepare social workers, psychologists, music and physical education teachers, and all the other professional personnel in schools, with the knowledge and skills that they need to help English Language Learners (ELL) students to succeed in school, at work and in the community.

    • teach participants to recognize the best educational practices and will then use these practices to insure English Language Learners (ELL) students receive the help and instruction they need.
       

  • Note: This course is designed to ensure Category III educators have insight to linguistics, cross-cultural communication, teaching methods, curriculum designs, and assessment and evaluation techniques that benefit English Language Learners (ELL) and support working with ESOL students, parents, school personnel, and school communities. All personnel who have contact with ELL students are required to successfully complete 18 hours of ESOL-approved in-service. As the number of ELL students continues to increase, the knowledge obtained in this course will empower educational professionals to work more effectively with these students.

Applied Linguistics (60 hrs)

  • Course Type: Online Learning

    Objective:This course is designed to:

    • help teachers acquire a greater understanding of the structure of English from a modern day linguistic perspective.

    • prepare teachers to analyze the structure of English in contrast with the language/s of the target population in a given class. 

  • Note: Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply what they learn during the online sessions to real classroom situations

Cross Cultural Communications and Understanding (60 hrs)

  • Course Type: Online Learning

  • Objective: This course is designed to:

    • enable teachers to identify the major cultures represented by the English Language Learners (ELL) students in Florida public schools in order to develop better cross-cultural understanding among all groups and to appropriately meet their special needs within the school and community setting.

  • Note: Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply what they learn during the online sessions to a real situation in their school or community.

Curriculum and Materials Development for ESOL Teachers (60 hrs)

  • Course Type: Online Learning

  • Objective: This course is designed to:

    • improve and enhance the teacher's knowledge of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) curriculum.

    • equip teachers with knowledge of materials appropriate for use with English Language Learners (ELL) students.

  • Note: Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply what they learn during the online sessions to a real situation in their content area.

ESOL Testing and Evaluation (60 hrs)

  • Course Type: Online Learning

  • Objective:This course is designed to:

    • enable the teachers to demonstrate the ability to assess initial English language proficiency for placement and instruction.

    • enable the teachers to identify and or develop instruments to determine the ability and instructional placement of students to function in regular classes for English speakers.

  • Note: Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply testing principles that they learn during the online sessions to a real situation in their content area.

ESOL Methods of Teaching (60 hrs)

  • Course Type: Online Learning

  • Objective:This course is designed to:

    • help teachers identify and apply English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) methodologies and approaches in the teaching of English Language students.

    • enable teachers to demonstrate awareness of the central role of ESOL within the total school curriculum and identify cognitive approaches to second language learning.

  • Note: Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply what they learn during the online sessions to a real situation in their classroom setting.

Category II Courses

Essentials For Content Teachers (60 hrs)

  • Course Type: Online Learning

  • Objective: This course is designed to:

    • help school-based personnel address cultural diversity by determining the appropriateness of instruction and learning opportunities for English Language Learners.

    • It is designed to prepare professional educators with the knowledge and skills that they need to help ELLs succeed.

  • Note: This course is designed to empower Category II teachers. Teachers will learn best teaching practices that take literacy and language concerns into account when approaching challenging subject matter, critical thinking and problem solving skills. Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply what they have learned to a real situation in their content area during the online sessions.

Category IV Courses

ESOL for Administrators (60 hrs)

  • Course Type: Online Learning

  • Objective:This course is designed to:

    • ensure that administrative personnel address diversity by determining the appropriate activities for ESOL students.

    • enable administrators to increase their knowledge of their roles and responsibilities in Florida's schools regarding English Language Learners (ELL) students.

    • prepare principals and other administrators with the skills that they need to help these students to succeed in school, work and in the community.

  • Note: Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply what they learn during the online sessions to a real school situation.

ESOL for Guidance Counselors (60 hrs)

  • Course Type: Online Learning

  • Objective:This course is designed to:

    • empower Guidance Counselors to lead their schools as the English Language Learners (ELL) population continues to increase

    • prepare Guidance Counselors to ensure ELL students are accurately placed and provided with a challenging instructional program

    • equip Guidance Counselors with the best practices and requirements for the placement of students with secondary credits from their native countries.

    • equip Guidance Counselors to recognize the effects culture and social economic status have on academic performance and test results.

  • Note: Many assignments revolve around classroom applications. Participants will be given an opportunity to apply what they learn during online sessions to real situations in their guidance position.
